Position: Portfolio Accountant

Accounting Department Overview:

The Accounting Department plays an integral role in the post-trade component of Bridgewater's investment process.  Accounting is responsible for the monthly reconciliation, working closely with custodian banks to provide the most accurate valuations.  We are also responsible for the calculation and reporting of monthly performance, providing returns and valuations to clients.  Accounting works hand-in-hand with Operations, Client Service Reporting, and other groups at Bridgewater who are devoted to portfolio management and client communications.  Bridgewater's unique non-hierarchical culture and passion for constant innovation provide an unlimited upside for the talented candidate who proves capable of creating a positive and timely impact in the Accounting Department.

 

Position Summary:

As a Portfolio Accountant, as in all areas at Bridgewater, you are challenged to constantly strive for process improvement and creative solutions.  The best candidates are those who possess extraordinary intellectual capability and curiosity. Portfolio Accountants will begin their career with a training plan that includes securities training and one-on-one training to better understand the account landscape and their department.  They will also be assigned individual responsibility for client accounts.  A Senior Portfolio Accountant will be assigned to mentor new Portfolio Accountants as they learn the reconciliation process and become independent in problem solving and identifying process improvement.  As Portfolio Accountants demonstrate their skills, they will be assigned more challenging accounts and diverse projects.  An experienced Portfolio Accountant could later become a trainer and reviewer or move into a project or audit role depending upon his/her proven strengths and initiatives.

 

Responsibilities would include:

  • Managing the final valuation of Bridgewater's client accounts
  • Identifying areas for process improvements and developing solutions
  • Performing monthly reconciliations of positions, market value, and accruals between custodian banks, brokers, and Bridgewater's daily accounting
  • Maintaining responsibility for the calculation of the investment performance and account benchmarks for client portfolios
  • Ensuring that preliminary estimates of account performance are available for communication to clients
  • Preparing performance and valuation reports for clients on a monthly basis, including specialized reports that are tailored to the client's or custodian bank's needs

 

Position Requirements:

  • College degree with a competitive GPA and demonstrated math or analytical ability
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Excel is essential
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Work well in an unsupervised environment, using discretion and independent judgment in solving problems and prioritizing work
  • Ability to juggle more than one project at a time and work in a fast-paced environment

 

Preferred candidate would also meet the following criteria:

  • Accounting, reconciliation, or security experience
